Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a road-map for juniors from 6 to 18+ years of age, based on age-appropriate skill acquisition, with more complicated and specialized movement patterns introduced as the junior progresses to the next level of development.

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) combine two or more body segments. Examples include locomotion, stability, object control and body awareness. Progressing beyond these skills prematurely inhibits full athletic potential.

Functional Movement Patterns are created with fitness training that focuses on stability and mobility through a full range of body motion. These patterns are promoted through supervised sport specific and cross training.

Transition to Fundamental Sport Skills (FSS) generally occurs near the onset of the main growth spurt. Developing a broad sense of FMS and FSS help juniors become better athletes.

RSX junior criteria and sport information

The RSX program at PhysiCore accepts juniors between the ages of 10 and 18 years old. As part of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), we train juniors with three different focuses:

  1. Those in Early Specialization sports - where juniors must excel at an early age to compete at a high level:
    • Gymnastics
    • Figure Skating
    • Diving
  2. Those in Late Specialization sports - where most athletes spend more than 10 years honing skills before reaching for the highest level:
    • Golf
    • Baseball
    • Soccer
    • Track and Field Events (Sprints, Throws and Jumps)
  3. Those in Rotational Sports - where at any age and at any level, the athlete must have the ability to stabilize the core for the ballistic forces required to generate power and distance:
    • Tennis
    • Golf
    • Baseball
    • Lacrosse
    • Field and Ice Hockey
    • Volleyball
    • Martial Arts

The PhysiCore RSX program strives to implement LTAD training with a focus towards developmental age, versus chronological age. By developmental age, we mean the degree of physical, mental, cognitive and emotional maturity of a junior, which cannot be measured with a calendar. We can observe skeletal development, growth velocity, functional movement patters, fundamental movement skills and sport skills assessments.
