Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a road-map for juniors
from 6 to 18+ years of age, based on age-appropriate skill acquisition,
with more complicated and specialized movement patterns introduced
as the junior progresses to the next level of development.
Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) combine two or more body
segments. Examples include locomotion, stability, object control
and body awareness. Progressing beyond these skills prematurely
inhibits full athletic potential.
Functional Movement Patterns are created with fitness training
that focuses on stability and mobility through a full range of body
motion. These patterns are promoted through supervised sport specific
and cross training.
Transition to Fundamental Sport Skills (FSS) generally occurs
near the onset of the main growth spurt. Developing a broad sense
of FMS and FSS help juniors become better athletes.
